UTS’s Graduate School of Health (GSH) will have a new home in a building taking shape in the Central Park development opposite the university’s Ultimo campus.
Frasers Property Australia, Sekisui House Australia and Impact Investment Group announced today that the Graduate School of Health will occupy the commercial space in One Hundred Broadway, on the corner of Abercrombie Street and Broadway in the $2 billion Central Park masterplanned community.
From there the GSH will provide postgraduate courses in the disciplines of pharmacy, clinical psychology, orthoptics and physiotherapy, along with new programs such as genetic counselling, Indigenous health and speech pathology, as they are developed.
The school also plans to operate a multidisciplinary primary health care clinic at Central Park that supports its teaching and research in these disciplines but which will also be of benefit to the community. The GSH will occupy the entire commercial space of the building, spanning six levels.
The Graduate School of Health has about 500 senior, postgraduate students. Up to 300 students will attend the Central Park premises during semester in addition to 80 full-time researchers and clinical staff, along with patients and clinical research participants.
UTS Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Resources), Patrick Woods, said a number of compelling factors confirmed the decision to lease the entire space available at One Hundred Broadway.
“Not only is this beautifully designed building ideally located in relation to our growing city campus, it also gives us flexibility to custom design the interiors to meet the particular needs of the Graduate School of Health,” Mr Woods said.
“Subject to planning approval, the GSH fit-out will feature the latest in design and technology to support its teaching and research. This will include elements such as practice-based learning pod classrooms, clinical simulation rooms that mimic the clinical environment, and collaborative meeting rooms and work spaces.”
The head of the Graduate School of Health, Professor Charlie Benrimoj, said the multidisciplinary primary health care clinic would be focused and specialised. “It will be a clinic for specific, targeted patient groups,” he said. “While supporting our work, it will also be of benefit to Central Park tenants, the UTS community and the wider local community.”
Central Park’s Project Director, Mick Caddey, said the Graduate School of Health would contribute greatly to the diverse community that makes up Central Park. “We worked extensively with UTS to ensure the use of the space dovetails into the overall ethic of Central Park and our focus on the broad agenda of community sustainability and wellbeing,” he said.
“As UTS sought to meet the needs of its fast-growing Graduate School of Health, it made sense for it to look to Central Park, being so close to the university’s city campus,” Mr Caddey said.
Currently under construction, the DUO development, which includes One Hundred Broadway, is due for completion in late 2018. The Graduate School of Health expects to begin operating there in mid-2019.
