In summary:

  • Two curated exhibitions and two fashion shows will showcase the work of students from the UTS schools of Design and Architecture
  • The exhibitions include work from undergraduate and postgraduate programs and various design disciplines

The work of students from all years and disciplines in the UTS Design and Architecture schools will be showcased in a series of exhibitions and shows over the next two weeks.

Material Culture, a curated exhibition, encompasses student work from across a range of design disciplines while INDEX 2011, also a curated student exhibition, displays work from the School of Architecture. These exhibitions will be accompanied by the 2011 UTS Graduate Fashion show.

Head of the UTS School of Design and initiator of the Material Culture exhibition, Professor Lawrence Wallen, said the exhibition, opening on Tuesday 6 December, focuses on the process of design and showcases the diversity of creative engagements within the school.

"The exhibition centres on the dialogue between the material object and a globally networked immaterial culture," Professor Wallen said.

The collections from graduate students of Bachelor of Design in Fashion and Textiles will be showcased in two runway shows on Tuesday 6 December at the UTS Great Hall.

Final-year Fashion and Textiles student Caitlin Murray, whose work will be exhibited, said the show was a great way of getting exposure in the fashion industry and showcasing work to the wider community.

"As a fashion graduate, you want to get your name and your designs out into the industry as much as possible. This exposure can lead to new opportunities that include being approached by a stylist who may want to use your designs in an editorial photo shoot, or someone may offer you an internship," Ms Murray said.

"It has been a great experience putting this show together as it's rare to have complete control over the design vision and such creative freedom in a fashion show."

INDEX 2011 is an exploration of urban events that features student work from across the UTS School of Architecture. The exhibition, from Friday (2 December) to 6 December, will be opened by Architect Charles Renfro (Diller Scofidio + Renfro, NY). The exhibition will be held at various locations on Kensington St Chippendale.
