UTS Multi-Purpose Sports Hall set to open
The Multi-Purpose Sports Hall will sit under Alumni Green, at the heart of the City Campus.
In summary:
- The University of Technology, Sydney’s Multi-Purpose Sports Hall will officially open on 14 April 2011
- To celebrate the opening the UTS Union will host a gala sports event, with exhibition sports matches and demonstrations
- The Sports Hall is the first new facility completed under UTS's City Campus Master Plan
The University of Technology, Sydney’s Multi-Purpose Sports Hall will officially open on 14 April 2011, making it the first new facility completed as part of the university’s visionary City Campus Master Plan.
Located under Alumni Green at the heart of the campus, the Sports Hall is a new academic facility designed for students enrolled in UTS’s various sports- and leisure-related degrees.
The Sports Hall will also provide an indoor, City Campus venue for UTS’s social and elite sporting community, supporting an already vibrant, on-campus culture.
Gala Sports Day
To celebrate the opening the UTS Union will host a gala sports event, with exhibition sports matches and demonstrations from a selection of its sporting clubs and societies, including futsal, fencing and basketball.
The first event of the day will be the inaugural UTS mixed netball trophy featuring the top two teams from UTS’s social netball league.
UTS staff, students and members of the local community are invited to come and see this exciting new facility in use.
A complete schedule of the day’s events, which will include a lunchtime BBQ, can be found on the UTS Union website.
Award-winning architects
UTS has continued the design excellence present in all its Master Plan projects, engaging award-winning Australian practice PTW to design the Sports Hall.
PTW’s notable projects include the Beijing Watercube, or National Swimming Centre, the principal swimming and diving venue for the 2008 Olympics.

Located beneath Alumni Green and adjacent to the existing UTS Fitness Centre (CB04), the Sports Hall comprises an indoor sports court and connecting tutorial and change rooms. A gym and a dance studio are located on a mezzanine level above the court.
The architect’s design concept makes use of the site’s natural sandstone texture and colour. Exposed rock-face becomes one of the principal features of the space. A dramatic light well defines the entrance area, brining natural light into the underground space.
About the City Campus Master Plan
The UTS City Campus Master Plan is a vision to deliver an iconic and connected campus that supports the university’s vision to become a world-leading university of technology. The Master Plan is also a ten-year $1 billion redevelopment that will help transform the southern Sydney CBD.

It is appalling that money is wasted on this when many classrooms lack adequate audio-visual equipment and some do not even have an overhead projector. Surely equipment which advantages many students must take precedence over a sports centre that will be used by a few.

I think the sports hall is a great idea because we were previously fairly limited on space for large sporting activities. Even happier to hear there is a dance studio. What UTS has been lacking is music/dance events that bring all faculty's together as well as invite those outside the uni. I'm not just talking about small socials held at the loft and in the glasshouse. Other uni's hold large events at Manning Bar, The Roundhouse and other spaces, and now we can better publicise our uni and our social life to all the other students and build on our appeal as a uni choice.

The latest re-developments including this sports hall and new spaces are improving the student life and community at UTS, something the university has been lacking for a long time. Great work guys.

In fact, money for different improvements comes from different funding pools. So money spend on the sports hall does *not* actually take money away from other worthy developments like better AV equipment.
So it is not actually wasted - it is terrific way to improve a part of the students experience at UTS. Our uni has been missing this kind of venue, and many Union clubs and students are very happy that this is finally up and running.

So glad that I still have 3.5 years to enjoy the new buildings and factilities! Dear anon, class sizes and quality of classes is one thing, good working environments and creative activity in campus life is another. I reckon most lecturers and tutorial leaders are doing pretty well already considering the general lack of enthusiasm in students these days. Big classes can be quite rewarding if all are interested in the subject.
Back to the redevelopment plans - I hope the basketball court is available for general use, because I haven't played since highschool and am seriously itching to get back on the court! Can't wait to see the new Business building and revamped Great Hall!

@ Anonymous: The UTS Union will manage the MPSH (which will open for use by the UTS community from around 18 May). My understanding is that there will be no charges to use the facility. However, you will need to book the space. Best way to do this is by joining a Union sports club or joining a social competition. When the court is not booked staff and students will be able to use it on a casual basis. For more information, or to make an EOI for booking the space, visit the UTS Union website: http://www.utsunion.uts.edu.au/sports/stadium.html

In terms of the gala sports day of demonstrations for the opening of the multi-purpose hall; how do students get involved which such sport societies as UTS Futsal. I have never known this to exist and am guessing it will only be beginning now due to the construction of this new facility.
Where can i find more information about this?
