This is a rare opportunity to see original work by the world's leading type designers on display in Sydney, ranging from posters, character design and editorial/book design, to packaging and experimental work. The Tokyo Type Directors Club was formed in 1987 and, since 1990, has staged an annual international design competition to celebrate this deep affiliation with, and interrogation of type in many guises. Along with international judges, fifteen of Japan's leading typographers and graphic designers assess the best work. The award's freshness and vitality has constantly challenged what is thought of as typography and typo-graphics. For the exhibition "plus and minus equals times," John Warwicker, of maverick art and design collective tomato, has curated a selection from the competition's history to be shown alongside the year's nominees and award winners. The exhibition which has been organised by the Faculty Gallery, Monash Art & Design and endorsed by Icograda, International Council of Graphic Design Associations runs from 14 August to 14 September 2007.
